Description:Course DescriptionThe History of Rock and Roll is an in-depth study of the origins of popular music from Tin Pan Alley through today’s hit music.  The primary objective of this course is to develop knowledge and awareness of the evolution of popular music.  Students will develop listening skills through recorded music, music videos and movies.  They will also use reading, note taking, and critical thinking skills. Upon completion of this class, students will be able to describe the evolution of popular music from the 1940’s to the present day.  They will also discuss how cultural and social elements are reflected in music, demonstrate an ability to identify individual rock music styles, detect the value of music in everyday life, and identify the names and contributions of key rock personalities.  

Student AssessmentThis course is primarily project and discussion driven.  Students in this course are expected to enjoy learning about the material and  to try to get an appreciation about the various types of music discussed in this class.  There will be very few tests in this class, most of the grades will come from class discussions, song analysis, reading assignments, and group and individual projects.
